Dr. W.E. Dubois

On November 18, 2017 while in Ghana I had the chance to visit the house of Dr. W.E.B Du Bois, former leading African American sociologist, bought for him by the first ever President of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. This house was gifted to him because Dr. W.E.B Du Bois was Dr. Kwame’s mentor in Pan Africanism. In Dr. Du Bois’s home, I had a chance to see all 1,976 books written by Dr. Du Bois himself in addition to him and his wife’s personal book collection.  Du Bois was a very influential person. For his birthday the Chinese government brought him gifts, each gift symbolizing something. The Chinese government had respected him. One of these gifts, which was a gift for his 91st birthday was a sewing of a Chinese man with grey hair. The grey hair in the sewing represented old age, the scroll represented wisdom, his cane has represented leadership, and the fruit in the sewing represented charity.

Another gift that was given to Dr. Dubois by the Chinese government was two orange scroll paintings with a certificate that said ” A credit to color races, you are a shining example, winning universal admiration, committed to world peace, you are riding the east wind, enjoying happy longevity”. Being able to see all the gifts people sent Dr. Dubois because they admire him so much was a truly awesome experience. Dr. Dubois was appreciated by so many people and I was blessed to learn more about him.
