Actor Kofi Siriboe recently released a short documentary entitled, “WTF is Mental Health?” This is a four minute documentary that provides an outlook into a topic that is rarely addressed; Mental Health within the African American community. It consists of a compilation of interviews based on people’s experiences with mental health, specifically depression.
Within those short, few minutes, the audience learns that mental health is as important as physical health and it should be treated as such. Our emotions caused by our mental health are linked to how we socially interact with people and it dictates whether or not we possess health relationships.
One of those interviewed had made a strong point by stating, “Without attention being brought to where we are mentally, we really can’t progress.” People within the African American community are under the impression that others will not understand their struggles concerning mental health. Therefore, they refuse to express themselves. We must shed light on this topic and have more conversations about it, so that victims of mental health disorders can freely express themselves.
