On September 10, 2020, Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax mentioned that he will be entering the 2021 race for Virginia governor. “I plan to file today to run for governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia in 2021,” he said, according to The Washington Post. Fairfax is only the second African American elected statewide in Virginia. He then goes to say that he is hoping to follow in the footsteps of L. Douglas Wilder, who a generation ago used his role as Lieutenant Governor as a steppingstone in the Executive Mansion.
