When The Player Becomes The Coach

Becky Hammon

What an amazing woman. She was the first woman to ever head coach an NBA team. The way she got a chance wasn’t easy.

She was undrafted in the 1999 WNBA draft. Even being undrafted she still had a great basketball career averaging 13.0 pts 3.8ast and 1.1 steals per game.

During her second to last year in the WNBA, she got injured and while being injured she went to the San Antonio Spurs games and meetings. When there she knew that she wanted to be a coach after her playing days. Her time coming to those games and meetings paid off.

In August 2014, she was named the assistant coach of Spurs. Becoming the second woman to that in NBA history. She has been the assistant coach for years now but, on the day of December 30th, 2020 she got her big break. The great Gregg Popovich head coach of the Spurs was ejected (kicked out) during the second quarter and Becky (assistant) took over and coached for the rest of the game.  She gave a valiant effort but her and her Spurs lost to the defending champions Lakers 121-107.

Even though the team took a tough loss the head coach Popovich didn’t think her becoming the first woman head coach was a big deal but, to his defense, he feels like she was “very qualified” for this job.
