subject: Financial Merit Award Opportunity for Seniors – D.C. Area Phi Beta Kappa Association

Hello,

Each year, the Phi Beta Kappa (PBK) Association of the D.C. Area offers up to three awards of $1,000 to deserving recipients living in the Washington, D.C., area. Phi Beta Kappa is the nation’s oldest and most eminent academic honor society, with almost half a million members. It was founded in 1776 at William and Mary College in Williamsburg, Virginia, and has today over 250 chapters at universities and colleges throughout the country. Since 1974, this award has been made annually by our D.C. Area PBK Association to recognize local students and assist them with college or university tuition.

We would be delighted to receive applications from your graduating high school seniors. I have reached out to you as 12th Grade Counselors at Charles H. Flowers High per the school’s website, but please let me know if there is another contact at your school I should direct this message to. I have attached to this e-mail a document that outlines the criteria and application process for the award and the application form. You can find more information about the award on our website http://www.dcpbk.org/programs/high-school-awards.

We would encourage you to kindly share this information with your teachers and their accomplished and deserving students. While our criteria are academically competitive, we also give students an opportunity in a personal statement to describe the quality of their character and ability to overcome any significant scholastic, environmental, or personal challenges in the course of their student lives.

Applications must be submitted electronically by April 24, 2017, to [email protected]. Successful applicants will be notified by early May. Awards will be presented at a ceremony in mid-May at the Phi Beta Kappa Society’s National Headquarters in Washington, D.C. The awardees, members of their immediate family, and a representative of the school will be invited to the ceremony. We hope that you will be able to join us as well.

If you have any questions during this process, please do not hesitate to ask. I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind Regards,

Kate Hannon
