Mental Health Outreach
October 13, 2017
Special Mental Health is highly regarded at Charles Herbert Flowers High School with the implementation of our special education program and activities that encourage integration.
With the start of the 2017-2018 school year, activities such as Best Buddies and Unified Sports have begun. Best buddies’ involves a general education and special education student building a relationship together in order to dissolve the separation that society has created between the two. This club grants special education students access to more social interactions and the opportunity to feel less isolated because of their disability.
An interest meeting was held on Wednesday, October 4, 2017, in room number 106 at 2:30 p.m. In order to partake in this activity, students must sign up by utilizing the online application Ms. Brandy Murphy, the Best Buddies and Unified Sports coordinator, sent to their Prince George’s County Public School emails.
To further solidify this integration, Unified Sports is another activity that offers an environment where special education and general education students can travel and compete together in order to beat other high schools. Unified Sports involves indoor Softball, Track and Field, and Bocce. With Unified Sports, general education students are creating an atmosphere where special education students are encouraged to engage in social activities and healthy competitions. In exchange, general education students are able to learn more about mental health and how to support those with it, which enables them to obtain service learning hours.
The first meeting for the year was held on Thursday, September 21, 2017, but if you are still interested in joining despite missing the interest meeting, you can contact Ms. Brandy Murphy in room 106.
