On the morning of Sunday November 5, 2017, a twenty-seven year old man by the name of Devin Patrick Kelley opened fire on a local church in Sutherland Springs, Texas.
Kelley reportedly escaped from a mental health facility that he was sentenced to as a result of him threatening Air Force commanders with guns. A total of twenty six people were killed in this shooting and twenty other people from the church were wounded.
Many people were shocked about the shooting and some commented that all the warning signs of his mental illness were there. According to Kelley’s ex-wife, he had a history of domestic violence and sexual assault accusations. “His domestic violence record alone should’ve barred him under Texas law from purchasing guns,” said CNN. Though the necessary precautions weren’t taken, as his name wasn’t included on the federal database that licensed gun dealers are required to check before selling a firearm to an individual.
