My Opinion on Honor Roll Assemblies

December 4, 2017
On Thursday, November 30th, 2017, during 1st period, my class had a discussion about the honor roll assembly. Personally, I did not attend my ceremony because I view it as taking away from my class period and learning time. My teacher asked me,”Why didn’t you want to go? It’s an excuse to leave from class.”
Personally, not to brag, but I have been to honor roll assemblies throughout my entire elementary and high school careers. As the years progress, these assemblies become more boring and pointless. Initially, it made me feel as if I stood out from the rest of the kids in my class, maybe even the school. In middle school, yeah, it felt great to be out of class especially with the work load I was getting adjusted too. But now it just seems pointless.
It is pointless because it no longer feels special to me. The school wants to reward you for your “hard work” and “dedication” when everyone knows you cheated to get an A on that quiz. If that piece of paper is so important why does no one care about it when you are completing applications for jobs, colleges, etc?
My whole view on this situation is that if this does not benefit my adult future it is not important. At the end of the day, no one will ask you, ”How many times did you make honor roll? Were you a straight A and B student in high school?” This is because it does not matter. What matters is what you apply or provide to the corporations or people you will be working for in the future.
