From PGCPS Official Press Release:

In response to substantial revenue cuts for the 2011-2012 school year, Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) has initiated a new annual athletics activity fee for students who are selected as members of an Interscholastic Athletic Team. The one-time fee of $50 will be collected prior to the beginning of each sports season, and will cover the student’s participation in high school athletics for the entire year–even if they transfer to another PGCPS school or are selected to participate on multiple athletic teams.
“This is the first time we have implemented an activity fee for high school athletics in our district,” said Dr. William R. Hite, Jr., Superintendent of Schools. “It is one of many strategies that will enable us to continue enrichment and extracurricular programs for students during these difficult economic times.”
Administrative Procedure 5157 provides detailed information and guidelines for notifying parents and collecting the High School Interscholastic Activity Fee. A copy of the procedure can be downloaded from the PGCPS Web site at
Parents or guardians will be notified of the fee at the beginning of the school year and each sports season. Families experiencing financial hardship may request a modified payment plan or a waiver of the fee from their child’s school. The ability to pay the fee will not affect a student’s selection for participation in interscholastic athletics, as selection is based on competitive performance in the specific activity. The fee is not refundable if a student quits the team, leaves the school district, or is cut for violating team rules.
