The U.S. Department of Education, White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities are seeking interns for Spring of 2018!
This Internship Program will provide HBCU students with an opportunity to learn more about HBCUs and their impact on the economy, higher education policy, federal funding opportunities, communications, and outreach. This internship will be located at the U.S. Department of Education in Washington, D.C. The Initiative and Department will not provide transportation or lodging.

Responsibilities

  • Collecting and compiling research and data related to HBCUs;
  • Participating in strategic planning meetings, staff meetings and other Department briefings and meetings relevant to the work of the Initiative;
  • Compiling meeting minutes;
  • Assisting and creating and/or updating presentations, fact sheets, one-pagers and talking points;
  • Greeting and escorting visitors to meetings;
  • Assisting with planning and implementation needs for upcoming local events and meetings, which can include collecting/researching background materials, creating promotional materials; and
  • Contributing to the creative efforts of the Initiative.

In addition, opportunities for developmental growth are welcomed and encouraged, such as informational meetings with senior Department officials and officials from external organizations.  Throughout the course of the internship students will have the opportunity to attend in the planning and management of meetings, briefings and other special events at the White House and in other federal agencies. Duties also will vary slightly for students pursuing terminal degrees such as Ph.D. or E.D. Candidates.

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access)
  • Takes initiative and proactively tackles responsibilities
  • Ability to work across networks

Timeframe

  • Interns must be available to be in the office at least three days per week. Office hours can be negotiated.
  • Spring Internship will take place February-May

Eligibility

  • You must be a U.S. citizen or have a resident visa to apply.
  • You also must be enrolled part- or full-time in an accredited HBCU.
