Loss of an Idol

Tonea Epps

For all K-Pop fans, I am truly sorry to inform you the devastating news that K-Pop boy band SHINee’s lead singer Kim Jonghyun died on Monday, December 18, 2017, at age 27. The police investigated that he committed a possible suicide because of depression. The K-pop idol was rushed to the hospital in a state of cardiac arrest, after being found unconscious at his apartment in Cheongdamdong, southern Seoul. The police reported that Kim Jonghyun died from carbon monoxide poisoning when he was found with burning coal in a frying pan nearby. Jonghyun’s sister reported to the police after receiving many suspicious text messages that alluded to a “final goodbye” and she feared that he was going to take his life. Sadly, the police didn’t make it in time to save him. SHINee debuted in 2008 as a five-member group of a well-known company named SM Entertainment. After they debuted, they quickly rose to stardom and became one of the biggest K-pop boy groups. Over the past 10 years, SHINee recorded many albums and in 2017 they had a sold out concert of 55,000 people in the Tokyo Dome. Earlier this year, SHINee also had their first North American tour. Investigators said no post-mortem examination would be performed on his body and later ruled it a suicide.Earlier this week, SHINee posted an emotional tribute on their official Twitter account, saying in Korean: “Jonghyun, who loved music more than anyone… Forever, he will be remembered.” I hope another life would not be lost after this tragedy and show people would not do even with depression. I hope Kim Jonghyun is in a better place now and the rest of the SHINee members will live a better future in place for their friend. Rest in Peace Kim Jonghyun.
