Clifton Wharton earned a master of law degree from Boston University School of Law in 1923 and joined the Department of State as a law clerk. His career stretched across nearly four decades of service.
On February 5, 1957, Clifton R. Wharton Sr. was confirmed as a minister in Romania. He was the first black man to head a U.S. embassy in Europe.
Wharton held various posts at embassies and consulates around the world like Liberia, the Canary Islands, Madagascar, the Azores, and Portugal.
He was born on May 11, 1899 and died on April 25, 1990.
