“Spelman College, a historically Black college and a global leader in the education of women of African descent, is dedicated to academic excellence in the liberal arts and sciences and the intellectual, creative, ethical, and leadership development of its students. It was founded in 1881 as the Atlanta Baptist Female Seminary but in 1924 became Spelman College. Today, their student body comprises more than 2,100 students from 41 states and 15 foreign countries. Spelman has a 76 percent graduation rate (average over six years). Spelman offers 31 majors, and many more avenues of study through their partner, institutions in the Atlanta University Center. Spelman students have extended their learning experience beyond the campus classroom through study abroad. Students have traveled to over 40 countries including Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Europe and Latin America.
