New Week, New Sound

New Week, New Sound

Kameron Duncan, General Reporter

This week I’ll be looking at new singles by Drake and Wale.
Drake – Make Me Proud (f. Nicki Minaj)
Coming off hot with success of his latest single, “Headlines” Drake debuted “Make Me Proud” with the always-animated Nicki Minaj song on Saturday Night Live. The song is an upbeat and somewhat a “rap ballad” in which Drake waxes poetic about how independent and self-sufficient his lady is.
As usual, he transitions in between rapping and singing in this tune, and does it quite effortlessly. This song should take off pretty quickly, much like his previous hit “Best I Ever Had”, with the young female market.
A verse from Minaj should also help sell records, shown by the sales of the seemingly infinite singles she has been featured on in the past two years. Unfortunately, she doesn’t mesh well with Drake here, as her verse (while spirited) doesn’t really have much to do with the song. All in all, it is a good song. Just try to cover your ears for Nicki’s verse.

Wale – Focused (f. Kid Cudi)
The DMV’s favorite son, in rap, has an album coming out on November 1st called Ambition. He has been releasing singles (Tats on My Arm, Lotus Flower Bomb, Bait) like a madman to promote it in the last 3 weeks. This week is not any different, as Wale enlists Kid Cudi, who seemed to have been in hiding from society, to help out on this week’s record. Kid Cudi sings in the song. He feels forced when singing, and is a stark contrast to Wale’s rapping. As for Wale himself, he shines as usual. His metaphors and punchlines are on point, and he makes the song worth listening to.
Wale is projected to sell 100,000 records for his first week. This song just won’t influence anyone else to purchase the album that wouldn’t have already had it in their mind to do so. Fans of Cudi will love this song; everyone else might just like it a little.
