Euphemia Haynes

Euphemia Haynes was the first African American woman to get a PhD in Mathematics. Euphemia was born in 1890 and died in 1980. Euphemia was born and raised in Washington D.C. Sh earned degrees in both mathematics and education, in 1943.
 
She was born Martha Euphemia Lofton on September 11, 1890. Her father was a dentist known for and her mother was active in the Catholic Church. Haynes graduated M St. High School in 1907 and Miner Normal School in 1909. Later she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematics from Smith College.  Finally Haynes attended the University of Chicago and the Catholic University of America. At these universities she obtained her masters and eventually her PhD.
 
Euphemia Lofton Haynes is the perfect person to represent both Black and Women’s History Month.
