Janelle Penny Commissiong, a black Trinidadian woman, is the first black woman to win Miss Universe. She won the competition in 1977. As Deputy Chairman of Trinidad and Tobago Tourism Development Company, she advocates for black rights and world peace. Being awarded, Trinidad’s second highest award, the Trinity Cross in 1977.
