On September 17, 1983, Vanessa Williams made history by becoming the first black Miss America.
Upon winning Miss America, Williams faced a mass of hate mail and racial comments. This resentment caused her to feel depressed, and she said, “I never imagined I’d be that depressed about being Miss America.”
The dramatization for Williams didn’t stop there. Her reign ended early due to nude photos published of her in the Penthouse magazine.
Regardless of that, she didn’t give up. Williams rebounded with confidence and went on to have a career in films, television, and music that is growing strong to this day.
