Supreme Court To Decide Whether Title VII Covers LGBTQ Workers

Jason Credle

Heading to SCOTUS, soon to hear oral argument in an important case about Title VII, the federal law that prohibits employers from discriminating on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. This case-Fort Bend County v. Davis is one you probably haven’t heard much about, but nonetheless, it’s important because it affects individuals’ ability to go into court when their employers discriminate against them in violation of federal law.
SCOTUS will hear arguments on two huge civil rights issues next term: (1) Does Title VII’s prohibition on discrimination “because of sex” extend to sexual orientation? and (2) Does Title VII bar discrimination against transgender people based on their status or sex stereotyping?
