November 2, 2012 our school hosted their annual blood drive from 8:30am to 1:30pm. Mrs. Whitlock, our school nurse, had been looking forward to this day saying “I’m always excited about blood drives.” The purpose of the blood drive is to help sick people in need of transfusions, Recruiter and coordinator from MedStar Health Blood Donor Services, Wondra Mack had a lot to say about the blood drive.
Previously being hit by Hurricane Sandy. a lot of blood drives across PG County were cancelled because of the mess this natural disaster left behind. Wondra Mack was looking forward to the blood drive at Flowers saying “Flowers is one of my best schools. The kids are very enthusiastic about giving and are a good source.”
Since 1996 Ms. Mack knew she wanted to help others. That is how she became involved in the medical field. Once talking about her past, she explained the process of how the collect blood.
First a pint of blood is collected from the volunteer which has the potential to save three people lives. The blood is then tested and transfused to the ones who need it, like cancer and sickle cell patients.
In closing she said ‘My job is rewarding and a gift of life and I thank all of those who donated.” For participating volunteers received one free movie ticket good at any AMC Theater.
