San Francisco Encourages Drug Use, Former Candidate for Mayor Blames Liberal Policies

A former candidate for mayor in San Francisco has stated that as California’s state government leaned towards the left side of the political spectrum, and the city adopting socialist ideals has led to the homelessness issue over the years.
Richie Greenberg stated that “Little by little, we see the whittling away of law enforcement, and the norm now is having the homeless, the drug addicts, and mentally ill roaming the streets.”
A San Francisco resident recently used a plywood wall to block an alleyway commonly used by homeless individuals for drug deals and defecation. Due to multiple complaints, the plywood wall was removed, now opening the alleyway for more illegal transactions.
San Francisco is one of many victims of the drug epidemic in the United States, with drugs such as Heroin, Meth, and other opioids are destroying the desirable and clean neighborhoods by attracting homeless drug addicts. San Francisco has begun to sympathize with drug users, but not in the way you think.
The Department of Public Health has distributed over 4.5 million needles each year to the 22,000 drug users that roam the streets. “Safe snorting kits” were being distributed for at-risk and homeless adolescents. These bags were filled with instructions as to how to properly cut and snort cocaine, along with other tools commonly used by addicts, such as straws, razors, and a chopping board.
Organizations such as the San Francisco Drug Users Union demanded: “…a safe environment where people can use & enjoy drugs…” Opioid drugs have been proven to have detrimental effects on their users, families, and whole cities. San Francisco is encouraging addicts to take as many needles as they want, knowingly enabling the drug addictions of thousands of users instead of providing rehabilitation and other treatment options
In September of this year, President Trump has stated that his administration has noticed multiple environmental violations against the city of San Francisco due to its rampant homelessness problem. Trump made it known that dirty needles began plaguing the oceans and that the city would be placed on notice by the Environmental Protection Agency.
The mayor of San Francisco responded to Trump’s claims as, “…ridiculous. To be clear, San Francisco has a combined sewer system, one of the best and most effective in the country…” However, there is no needle exchange or proper disposal of used needles. The streets of San Francisco are littered with used needles and syringes, which now present another health crisis. Dirty and used needles pose a threat and chance of spreading blood-borne diseases such as HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C.
How did democratic policies lead to such a huge issue? It is widely known that Democrats are in favor of Medicare for all and free college. They advocate for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s Green New Deal, which discourages the use of fossil fuels and encourage the use of clean energy. They plan to place increased taxes on the rich to provide healthcare for all Americans and abolish the income gap between the rich and the poor. However, California has the country’s highest poverty rate, highest crime rate, and the lowest rating for “quality of life.”
California’s state taxes are among the highest in the country, as of 2018 it is at 7.25%. Other cities in California are known to reach up to 10%.
Tax legislations have increased taxes on products such as gasoline, cigarettes, and fruits which makes California wealthier and economically stable.
The higher taxes imposed on California citizens have led to middle-class families looking to reside in other states. According to one report described in The San Diego Union-Tribute, “People making $55,000 or less a year were mostly moving out of California between 2007 and 2016… while people making more than $200,000 a year moved in,” With many middle-class individuals leaving California, it left a wide wealth gap between the rich and the poor.
Due to California’s ambitious renewable energy agenda, nuclear plants and fossil-fuels are shunned in favor of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind. The use of renewable energy sources will cut jobs and raise prices on energy.
Multiple factors are to blame for California’s decline in quality of life and wellbeing. San Francisco was once a beautiful city with beautiful architecture and now it’s a cesspool for drug addicts, homeless individuals, and a litter infested streets. The encouragement of drug use, high taxes, high cost of living, and the income gap between the rich and the poor has resulted in a high crime rate and poverty.
