Black Celebrities Show True Love

Black Celebrities Show True Love

Meghan Brown, General Reporter

In history and pop culture, the media has mainly focused on the non-minority couples in today’s media. They have showed the public, Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth, Taylor Swift and whatever guy she is dating this month, and Julianne Hough and Ryan Seacrest. Rarely do they focus on the black power couples of our generation. Here are some of those black power couples of our generation

President Barack and First Lady Michele Obama
President Obama and the First Lady have been married for almost 21 years. They have two beautiful daughters, Malia, 14, and Sasha, 11. In 1989, Barack and Michelle went on their first date. It was a typical first date; they went to Baskin Robbins for ice cream and ate it outside. That is also the day they shared their first kiss. Today, at that very same Baskin Robbins, there is a plaque commemorating their first date. Fast-forward three years, on October 3rd; they exchanged vows in Trinity United Church in Chicago.
“That’s a relationship that you look up to, someone you can grind with and shine with.” said Nadiyah Randall.
Last Year was their first milestone anniversary, celebrating 20 years of marriage. Although October 3rd was the day of the first presidential debate, the couple celebrated their anniversary that Saturday and the President wished her a happy anniversary via Twitter:
Twenty years ago today, I married the love of my life and my best friend. Happy anniversary, Michelle. -Barack Obama (@BarackObama)
and she tweeted back:
Happy 20th anniversary, Barack. Thank you for being an incredible partner, friend, and father every day. I love you! –Michelle Obama (@MichelleObama)Truly the First Family of our generation.
Jay-Z and Beyonce Knowles
Shawn Carter and Beyonce Knowles are probably the most powerful black couple in pop culture. Everyone knew when they were dating, when the ygot married and when they had their first child but no one knows the details of their relationship but them and their closest friends and family. They have managed to keep an 11 year relationship under wraps and out of the public eye.
They first started dating in 2002 when Beyonce was only 19 years old. Jay-Z was 33 years old and Beyonce’s first relationship. She began her singing career at the tender age of 15. She did not have time to be a boy-crazed teenager like other non-pop star girls did. After dating for about 6 years, the couple secretly got married on April 4, 2008. Their wedding was small and intimate and no one knew about it except their closest friends and family.
“I love Beyonce and Jay-Z because it’s strong. They have a friendship as well as a relationship. Their love is powerful,” said A’lana Wastson.
Being a power couple can be hard sometimes, Beyonce’s tour schedule sometimes conflicted with Jay-Z’s but that did not stop them from having a beautiful baby girl on January 7, 2012 and named her Blue Ivy Carter. Of course now they are a power FAMILY because Blue Ivy became the youngest person ever to be #1 on the Billboard Charts when her voice appeared on her father’s song “Glory.”
Nelson Mandela and Winnie Mandela
Although Nelson and Winnie Mandela did not stay together forever, they were married for 38 years. They met in the 1950’s during his earlier political days. They tied the knot in 1958 and had two beautiful children, Zindzi, born 1960, and Zenani, born 1959. Unfortunately, 4 years later, he was charged for inciting workers to strike and leaving the country without valid documents and sent to jail for 5 years. 2 years later he was charged again for four counts of sabotage and received a life sentence for the charge. Winnie raised the children and remained strong and supportive of Mandela until his release, February 11, 1990. 6 years later they got a divorced, allegedly, because of her bad publicity threatening to destroy his political credibility.
