New York Teen Admits Kidnapping Was a HOAX

Karen Gutierrez Garcia

A 16-year-old teen caught on video surveillance being kidnapped as her mother fought back against attackers is now confirmed to have been a hoax.
In the disturbing video camera footage, the teen is seen walking with her mother along Eagle Avenue near East 156th Street in the Bronx at around 11:20 P.M on December 16, 2019. A tan-colored van approaches the pair and two men exit the vehicle as two men remain inside. As they force her into the van, the mother fights against her daughter’s kidnappers.
The alleged kidnapping made headlines as police were offering a $2,500 reward for any information leading to the arrest of the four suspects involved and the whereabouts of the missing teen.
Karol Sanchez, 16, was found safe and unharmed on Tuesday, December 17, 2019. She turned herself in to the police at 2:30 P.M.
After questioning from investigators, it is determined that Sanchez staged the kidnapping to get back at her mother for refusing to allow her to stay in the United States after her mother decided to move back to her native country of Honduras. She admitted that she and her mother had a difficult relationship, describing her mother as “overprotective.”
As the investigation continues, police are determining whether she or the two men will face criminal charges.
