Why the 2nd Amendment is Important

“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

The Constitution of the United States was written by the founding fathers in 1787 and has granted Americans inalienable rights that cannot be removed by the government. The most controversial Amendment is the 2nd Amendment which has sparked countless protests over the right to bear arms.
But what is the right to bear arms? The right to bear arms is a right given to Americans by the Constitution for the right to self-preservation. Many argue that the 2nd Amendment is old and should be rewritten for the new generation, but the 2nd Amendment is just as important today as it was hundreds of years ago. The main purpose of the 2nd Amendment is for citizens to fight against a tyrannical government.
Such cases of a tyrannical government exist in today’s time, for example, China’s oppressive regime and Russia’s oppressive regime. China is ruled by an oppressive government that restricts free speech and gun ownership. Open criticism of the president, Xi Jinping, will cause repercussions. Take into account the recent disappearance of a Chinese property mogul, a rich and powerful person, Ren Zhiqiang because of his open criticism of the president. In 2016, Zhiqiang was banned off a popular blogging site Weibo for his criticism of China’s leadership when China asked for total political obedience by all news media sources. Russia is also guilty of oppression with its recent slashing of an anti-Putin online blogger. Imran Aliev was found in his hotel with his throat slit and multiple wounds in his chest after his criticism of Russian president, Vladimir Putin. Aliev was a strong critic of Putin on his blog and multiple YouTube account under a pseudonym of Mansur Stariy.
Tyrannical governments are not a thing of the past and the 2nd Amendment allows Americans to fight back against an oppressive government. But the 2nd Amendment is also important in other regards.
The 2nd Amendment allows for the right of self-preservation and the 2nd Amendment allows for the right to self-defense. Guns have saved millions of lives, whether it be with concealed carry or defending your home from intruders. According to gunfacts.info, guns prevent an estimated 2.5 MILLION crimes a year and most often a gun is never fired, just brandishing the gun can prevent a crime. Home defense is extraordinarily important to protect yourself and your family from unwelcome intruders, as is the case of Sarah McKinley, a teen mom who used a shotgun to defend herself and her baby from intruders attempting to knock down her door. She killed one intruder and the other ran away.

American comedian, actor, and writer, Dave Chappelle has said, “The First Amendment is first for a reason. Second Amendment is just in case the first one doesn’t work out.”
