Did you know that ketchup first originated in China as a pickled fish sauce called ke-tsiap? Tomatoes only entered the recipe in the 19th century.
The first ever ketchup though, was a fish sauce made from salted, fermented anchovies (these are small common saltwater forage fish that are pretty salty and fishy but is still used as human food and fish bait).
