In 1881 Spelman College started in the basement of Friendship Baptist Church.

Then next year in 1882 John D.Rockefeller pledged $250 to the basement school.

In the near future in 1883 the school was moved from the basement to the current space occupying nine acres and five frame buildings. The college name was changed from “At;anta Baptist Female Seminary” to Spelman Seminary” in honor of Mrs.Laura Spelman Rockefeller.
