Who is Catherine the Great?

Catherine II, also known as Catherine the Great, became an empress of Russia who ruled from 1762-1796, the longest reign of any female Russian leader. Recognized greater for her affairs of the heart than for her political affairs, she nonetheless greatly dilated her empire. Her accomplishments are regularly overshadowed by legends and rumors about her scandalous personal life.

How did she assume the throne?

While she was 15 years old she was invited to Russia by Czarina Elizabeth. But while she was 24 years old, she was aided by her lover Grigory Orlov and his family’s power. Therefore, she staged a coup just 6 months after her husband took the throne.
