Standing on the Edge

Layla Peets

Standing on the edge, watching the waves come in.

Seeing each person walk to where the sand and water meet, it’s interesting.

I can see every person go to the edge so confidently. They always turn back though.

Never once touching a single drop of water.

Standing on the edge, watching the waves come in.

Seeing each person kick up the sand in anger, it’s interesting

I can see everyone so angry that they can’t touch the water. Even though it’s possible.

Never once even trying hard enough to go.

It’s peaceful where I am. I can view them from afar.

Watching the scene so closely, It’s almost laughable.

Surely they know that the waves are that close to them.

Surely they know that if they tried harder, they would make it.

Surely they know that they look foolish.

“Trying so hard,” only to give up near the end.

But that’s why I stay a safe distance away,

Standing on the edge.
