PG County Curfew (Opinion Piece)

Trinity Sanders

In early September, PG County set a curfew for teens, aged 16 and under, stating, “Teenagers under the age of 17 must be in their homes from 10 p.m to 5 a.m Sundays through Thursdays and 11:59 p.m to 5 a.m on Fridays and Saturdays unless they have an exemption or are accompanied by an adult”. Yes, it is proven that the number of minors involved in crimes has lowered, but I still believe it is unfair to punish good kids who are out trying to make something of themselves when there is only a small percentage of teens committing crimes. Curfews may lower teen crimes but it doesn’t prevent or stop teens from getting in trouble. Teens who want to commit a crime won’t let a curfew stop them.

Children under the age of 18 are the responsibility of their parents and it is not the County’s place to be another parent.
