Speech

Chris Thomas

At birth, we communicate in verbs;
Crying when hurt, laughing when happy,
But when we start to speak we are quiet
Or we are silenced.
A voice is a voice.
“In sickness and in health”, the voice of love.
“I’m sick of this world”, the voice of hate.
My black voice has been cut from me,
But will not be silenced.
My child’s voice has choked me,
But I still breathe air.
Martin Luther King did not give his speech to just speak
He gave it so the black voice,
Asian voice,
Old voice,
Young voice,
Criminal voice,
Innocent voice,
Can be heard.
Boy, stand up and don’t you ever bite your tongue!
