Hair at Flower High School
At Charles Herbert Flowers girls express themselves from head to toe. Hair is the biggest accessory.
Hair has divided itself into two categories. These categories are natural or perm.
Students were questioned from both sides, about their hair.
Students with natural hair  were asked a series of questions. How long have you been natural? What made you go natural? How do you like to wear your hair? How do you think society influenced the way you wear your hair today? How does your hair make you feel?
Halinta, a junior, response to these questions were “I have been natural all my life. I’ve always seen relaxing hair as a bad thing and it didn’t interest me. I like to wear my hair in Wash N Go’s, twist outs, and braids. Society treats natural hair as a bad thing and for so long I hated my hair. Now, I realized that my hair is beautiful and that it can be worn. My hair makes me feel good and I’m proud that it is versatile.”
Janae, a junior, also is a natural who gave me her opinion on the matter. “ I’ve been natural for 4 years. I did not like the texturizer I had so I went natural. I like to wear my hair out in a bush. Society did not influence the way I wear my hair. I was natural until I went to six grade but when I got a texturizer I did not like it so I went back to being natural. Society at the time was telling me to straighten my hair but I did not like what society was influencing me to do so I continued to wear my hair in a bush. My hair makes me feel beautiful.”

Students with perms were asked similar questions. How long have you had a perm? What made you get a perm? How do you like to wear your hair? How do you think society influenced the way you wear your hair today? How does your hair make you feel?
Amaya, a junior, with a perm shared her views. “ I’ve had a perm for 2 years. I got a perm because I sweat my hair out a lot. I like to wear my hair straight, parted down the middle. Society has had no affect on how I wear my hair. My hair makes me feel happy and pretty but sometimes really upset because it doesn’t cooperate LOL!!”
Overall hair is worn differently but one conclusion is the same. Hair makes you feel beautiful and happy.
It doesn’t matter how you wear it, style it, or take care of it. It’s yours to express and love.
Hair is the final touch to self-expression.
